Russ Pawlas Lynchburg, VA Death, Obituary

The Lynchburg community is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Russ Pawlas, a cherished educator, mentor, musician, and friend. Russ passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, enthusiasm, and dedication that touched countless lives over his more than three decades in music education.

Russ served as the Band Director at Brookville Middle School, following many impactful years at E.C. Glass High School and Altavista Combined School. Known for his easy smile, quick wit, and the unmistakable warmth he carried into every rehearsal room, he inspired generations of students to discover their own confidence and love for music. His colleagues remember him as “one of the good guys”—a man who led with heart, humor, and unwavering support for everyone around him.

Just last month, Russ spent time reconnecting with fellow directors during the Campbell County All-County Band event, relaxed and content, sharing laughter and stories in the way he was known for. Friends recall him driving the “party bus” full of directors to lunch, filling the ride with his signature laughter, snark, and infectious energy. Those who knew him say these are the moments they will hold closest.

Beyond his professional impact, Russ was a devoted father, friend, and recently a proud grandfather. His loved ones shared that he seemed profoundly joyful in this season of life. For many, memories of church gatherings, years raising children of similar ages, and shared milestones now feel even more treasured.

The suddenness of his passing has left his family, students, and colleagues in shock. Their grief is immeasurable, but so too is the mark Russ leaves behind—seen in every student he inspired, every musician he encouraged, and every friend who was lifted by his kindness.

Prayers and deepest condolences go out to Russ’s family, especially his children and grandchild, as well as the many students and educators who are grieving this tremendous loss. May his memory continue to resonate like the music he loved so deeply.
